It’s been a long time coming, but this is definitely a step in the right direction, and as the Tech Crunch article mentions, helps Google position their Chrome OS and ChromeBooks as viable options for normal people – IE people who don’t always always have an internet connection. Gmail offline is a basic email client, so you wont see many of the same.

Google has announced at Google I/O conference that it will be updating Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Docs sometime this summer to use the offline storage features in HTML5, thus bringing back offline Gmail. Click on the Free button to install the Gmail Offline app for Chrome.

However, they have yet to actually update the Gmail, or other Google Apps to use this feature of HTML5 – leaving users with no way of accessing offline Gmail anymore.Īnd now, finally, there’s an end in sight for this offline email dryspell. However a few months ago Google dropped support for Gears, since the new HTML5 standard natively supports offline storage. Choose your settings, such as how many days of messages you want to sync. Experience the fastest email in the world. Everything you do start-up, search, sending mail is blazingly fast. From your inbox, choose Settings Settings. Why Because 100ms is the threshold where interactions feel instantaneous. Users who want to work offline need to enable Gmail offline individually in their Gmail settings. Googles Gears was a browser plugin that enabled offline storage – allowing me to download all of my email into Gmail before getting on a flight, and then going through it offline, and syncing when I landed and got my connection back. The creator of Gmail, Paul Buchheit, had a rule: every interaction should be faster than 100ms. And up until recently, for those times when I’m offline, I could still access my Gmail offline using Google Gears. It can also be used as an instant messenger.

It also comes with Calendar and RSS feed support.

It comes with full support for all email services like Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, etc. For Gmail, the interface is great, fast with keyboard shortcuts, and since it’s all online, it’s available everywhere and doesn’t tax my local system. eM Client is another free email client which can be installed in Windows XP and later versions. It offers amazing integration with GMail (labels, priority inbox, multiple accounts, conversation view, etc) and was ported from the iPad interface of GMail, which makes it look very cool. I love using Google Apps for my Calendar, Documents, and especially email. You can convert it into a complete offline application by going to Wrench -> Tools -> Create Application Shortcuts.
